Night Out
Reykjavík has one of the most compact nightlife scenes in Europe — everything within a 10-minute walk along Laugavegur and Austurstræti, starting late and lasting until 4:30 AM on weekends.
The Night Out Brief
The shape of a Reykjavík Friday
Locals don't go out before 11 PM. Bars in the city centre stay fairly quiet until then, which means the first hours are for sit-down drinks at places like Kaldi Bar on Laugavegur 20 (Icelandic microbrews, about 1,300 ISK per pint) or Mikkeller & Friends on Hverfisgata 12. By midnight the Austurstræti / Ingólfstorg / Lækjargata triangle is the busy quadrant — Prikið, Lebowski Bar, Dillon for live acts, Húrra for DJs.
Live music
Reykjavík's music scene is dense out of proportion to the population. Iðnó on Vonarstræti and Gaukurinn on Tryggvagata host indie Icelandic bands most weekends. Mengi on Óðinsgata programs avant-garde and acoustic performances in a 50-seat room. Harpa handles the bigger acts — classical, touring rock, Iceland Airwaves festival.
The food move
Late-night food in Reykjavík is either Bæjarins Beztu hot dogs (open until 1 AM weekdays, 5 AM weekends) or the 24-hour Nonnabiti at Hafnarstræti 9. Sit-down dinner at places like Dill (Michelin), Snaps, or Matur og Drykkur requires booking 2–4 weeks out.
