Family Friendly
Reykjavík does family well — compact distances, safe streets, pool culture that expects kids, and a handful of attractions designed for curious 6–12 year olds without the usual tourist markup.

The Family Friendly Brief
A walkable city with pools on every side
Unlike most European capitals, Reykjavík is small enough that families don't spend half the day on transit. The entire city-centre loop from Hallgrímskirkja to the Old Harbour is a flat 20-minute walk, and the bus (Strætó, route 14 especially) connects most family-grade attractions within 15 minutes of each other. The geothermal pools — Laugardalslaug in particular, with its two water slides, children's pool, and 38°C hot pots — are where local families spend their weekend mornings. Entry for under-18s is typically half-price or free with a parent.
What a day looks like
Perlan's Wonders of Iceland is the single best rainy-day family anchor: an ice-cave walk, a planetarium, and a rooftop viewing deck, all under one geodesic dome. Whales of Iceland down on Grandi is a 45-minute walk-through of life-size whale replicas — unusually calm and good for under-7s. Árbær Open Air Museum (about 15 minutes east by bus) is a whole village of 19th and early 20th-century houses kids can walk through, with costumed staff in summer.
The food move
Food halls beat restaurants for families. Hlemmur Mathöll, Grandi Mathöll, and POSTURINN all seat parties of five to eight comfortably, serve in 10 minutes, and have enough variety that no-one loses. Skólavörðustígur's bakeries (especially Brauð & Co at #16) handle second breakfast.
