Esja is the mountain you see from every Reykjavík window — and the Mógilsá trailhead turns it into the easiest real hike you’ll do in Iceland.
Known for
Mount Esja rises 914 m on the north side of Kollafjörður bay and is the signature backdrop of every Reykjavík photo. The main trailhead at Mógilsá is a 20-minute drive up Route 1 from downtown. Most hikers aim for “Steinn,” a marked rock at 600 m — about 1 hour up — but the summit ridge is reachable for experienced hikers.
