Golden Circle: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
The Golden Circle is Iceland's most popular day trip. Here's how to make the most of it, whether you self-drive or join a tour.
What Is the Golden Circle?
The Golden Circle is a roughly 300-kilometre loop from Reykjavík that visits three iconic sites: **Þingvellir National Park**, the **Geysir geothermal area**, and **Gullfoss waterfall**. It's the most popular day trip in Iceland and can be done as a guided tour or self-drive.
The Three Stops
Þingvellir National Park A UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. It's also where Iceland's parliament (Alþingi) was founded in 930 AD.
Geysir Geothermal Area The original geyser (Geysir) is mostly dormant, but neighbouring Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes, shooting water up to 30 metres.
Gullfoss One of Iceland's most powerful waterfalls, cascading in two stages into a dramatic canyon. The mist and rainbow on sunny days are unforgettable.
Tour vs Self-Drive
**Tour pros:** No driving stress, guide commentary, pickup from Reykjavík **Self-drive pros:** Flexible timing, can add stops like Kerið crater or Secret Lagoon
Tips
- Start early to beat the crowds
- Wear layers and waterproof outerwear
- Budget 6–8 hours for the full route
- Summer days are long enough to add extra stops
